OVERVIEW:

Mataa is an Associate of the Firm and part of our Dispute Resolution Department. He specializes in commercial litigation and arbitration and also has extensive experience in Corporate Advisory, Debt Recovery, Insolvency, Employment Law, Securities, Tax Law, Competition Law, Pensions Law and Insurance Law.

Over the years, Mataa has played a key role in assisting both our local and international clients on complex matters touching on numerous aspects of corporate and commercial law including tax assessment matters before the Tax Appeals Tribunal, competition matters before the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, insolvency and business rescue proceedings before the High Court of Zambia as well as other contentious corporate law matters before the Arbitral Tribunal.

Mataa is also part of our Corporate Advisory team and occasionally assists our clients on various aspects of the law, including banking and financial regulation, insolvency and business rescue proceedings.

He is a member of the Law Association of Zambia.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Vedanta Resources Holdings Limited in a High-Profile Commercial Litigation against ZCCM Investments Holdings PLC (“ZCCM-IH”) and Konkola Copper Mines PLC (“KCM”), in the winding-up proceedings against KCM by ZCCM-IH.
  • Lactalis Zambia Limited (“Lactalis”), (formerly Parmalat Zambia Limited), a subsidiary of Lactalis Group relating to a class action brought by current and former employees of Lactalis emanating from the effect of name change and change of shareholding in Parmalat SpA on the existing contracts of employment, following Lactalis’ acquisition of a controlling stake in Parmalat SpA for circa €326.5 million.
  • BP Zambia Plc (now Puma Energy Zambia Plc “Puma”) relating to a class action brought by former employees of Puma before the High Court of Zambia in respect of a pensions claim involving circa ZMW26.3 million.
  • Kobold Metals on various aspects of Zambia law relating to the ongoing investment of US$150 million in Lubambe Copper Mine.
  • Part of the team that acted as local Counsel undertaking a legal due diligence to King and Wood Mallesons Beijing on the proposed acquisition of controlling stake by China Nonferrous Metal Industry's Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. (“NFC”), a company incorporated in the People’s Republic of China and listed on theShenzhen Stock Exchange in China Nonferrous Mining Corporation Limited (“CNMCL”) in respect of CNMCL’s subsidiaries which are NFC Africa Mining PLC, Chambishi Copper Smelter Limited, Sino-Metals Leach Zambia Limited, CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines PLC and Green Home Farm Limited.
  • Part of the team that acted as local Counsel rendering a legal opinion to Regional Education Finance Fund for Africa on the US$2,200,000 loan facility to Bay Port Financial Services Limited.
